Objective: The Certified Science Journalist course is designed to equip participants with the skills to research, interpret, and communicate complex scientific information in a clear, accurate, and engaging manner for the general public. The course covers fundamental journalism practices, science communication principles, fact-checking scientific claims, interviewing experts, and writing across multiple formats such as news articles, features, blogs, podcasts, and video scripts. 

Certification: Within 5 days after Completion of Online Assessment.

Steps to become a GSDCI Certified Professional:

Step 1: Select your certification you want to pursue.

Step 2: Click on get certified tab, new pop up window will open.

Step 3: Click on pay certification fee, you will be redirected to billing details page.

Step 4: Fill your details and click on pay certification fee, You will be redirected to payment gateway, pay fee by any available options like Card(Debit/Credit), Wallet, Paytm, Net banking, UPI and Google pay.

Step 5: You will get Login Credentials of Online E-Books and Online assessment link on your email id, within 48 hrs of payment.

Step 6: After completion of online assessment, you can download your Certificate Immediately.

Assessment Modules:

Module 1: Introduction to Science Journalism: Definition and scope of science journalism, Role of science journalists in society, Differences between science journalism, communication, and education, Historical evolution and milestones in science reporting, Understanding audiences for science content, Principles of clarity, accuracy, and objectivity in science writing.

Module 2: Understanding Scientific Research and Methods: Basics of the scientific method and research design, Reading and interpreting peer-reviewed journals and studies, Understanding scientific terminology and data, Identifying valid sources and avoiding pseudoscience, Explaining uncertainty, limitations, and peer review, Interviewing scientists and researchers effectively.

Module 3: Writing and Reporting Scientific News: Structure of a science news story (headline, lead, body), Translating complex information into accessible language, Writing features, profiles, and explainers, Covering scientific events, discoveries, and innovations, Reporting on controversial topics (climate change, GMOs, vaccines), Storytelling techniques in science journalism.

Module 4: Ethics and Responsibility in Science Reporting: Avoiding hype, fear-mongering, and misinformation, Balancing scientific accuracy with public interest, Ethical considerations in reporting medical or environmental risks, Disclosing conflicts of interest and funding sources, Handling embargoes and pre-publication materials, Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in science stories.

Module 5: Digital and Multimedia Science Journalism: Using blogs, podcasts, videos, and social media for science coverage, Creating infographics and data visualizations, SEO for science articles and headlines, Live-tweeting science events and conferences, Tools for digital verification and fact-checking, Engaging online audiences with interactive science content.

Module 6: Career Development and Specialization: Building a professional portfolio in science journalism, Freelancing vs working with science media outlets, Pitching science stories and working with editors, Specializing in fields such as space, environment, tech, or health, Joining science journalism associations and networks, Staying updated with scientific developments and trends.

GSDCI Online Assessment Detail:

  • Duration- 60 minutes.

  • Number of Questions from each module: 5.
  • Language: English.
  • Exam Type: Multiple Choice Questions.
  • Maximum Marks- 100, Passing Marks- 50%.
